## How to burn a token

1. Open your Cardano wallet and choose Send.
2. Paste the burn address, or the ADA Handle $burn-tokens, and pick the tokens or NFTs to remove.
3. Check twice, then confirm. About 1 to 1.5 ADA travels with every token and is burned too.


## Why people burn tokens

Many Cardano wallets fill up with things their owners never asked for. Someone sends you a random token or NFT, often with a link that leads to a scam website. You cannot stop people from sending them, but you can get rid of them.

- **Spam and scam tokens.** Never click links inside them. Burning removes them from your wallet so you are not tempted later.
- **NFTs you do not want.** Old test mints, airdrops you do not care about, or simply clutter.
- **Tokens from dead projects.** If a project is gone and its token has no use, burning cleans up your wallet view.

## Before you burn, think about these

Burning is final. Some things are better kept, sold or given away.

- **Never burn ADA.** There is no good reason to. If you do not need your ADA right now, [stake it](https://bkvpool.com/#delegate) and let it earn rewards, or give it to a cause you care about.
- **The ADA inside each token is burned too.** On Cardano, every token travels with a small amount of ADA, usually 1 to 1.5 ADA. Ten spam tokens can cost you more than 10 ADA to burn. Sometimes it is cheaper to simply hide them in your wallet.
- **Some tokens still have value.** Check a Cardano DEX or NFT marketplace first. Even tokens that look worthless can sometimes be traded, or used for voting in a project.
- **The project may offer an official burn.** If the token's minting policy is still open, the project can burn it properly and sometimes return your ADA. Ask them first.

## Is it safe?

Yes. The address is controlled by a public script, not by a person, and the script only allowed spending until 28 December 2023.
